Second ECIM App Challenge

Context
Transportation systems are undergoing a fundamental transformation. New technologies and business models, socio-demographic developments, changes in the production and use of energy have all played a role in the way transport services are packaged and delivered to end users. As a result, the latter’s preferences have evolved considerably in the past decade, so much so that it has become difficult, if not outright impossible, to satisfy them without providing, in the app-based form, real-time traffic information, open access to timetables and booking and payment options for services such as parking, public transport, car rental and bike sharing, among others.

Modern transport systems are also getting increasingly crowded as more and more companies keen to exploit and experiment with new business models, products and services are vying to enter the lucrative market that transport is today. In turn, the growing number of market players and new user preferences focused on seamless travel experience present additional challenges in the form of technical integration that need to be overcome if transport is to become the engine of sustainable growth and a source of joy for many.

It is precisely these integration challenges that ECIM aims to address with its flexible cloud platform. Built on a scalable architecture, the platform facilitates the migration of web services to the cloud and provides a mechanism for aggregating them with a range of other services and datasets. Once a service has been transferred to the cloud via RESTful API, a data plug-in is provided by the platform to allow any business, public authority or developer to interact directly with all ECIM services available on the Marketplace.

Participation requirements
To participate in the App Challenge all interested parties need to

  • address the problems described above in a creative way and demonstrate the added value of the proposed solution for a European city of their choice;
  • make use of ECIM web or data services provided on the Marketplace; and
  • present their ideas and demos at the hackathon that will take place on 5 March 2016 in Barcelona (see place and venue details below).

Process & evaluation
The Challenge will include two stages: hackathon and incubation. The hackathon will be run on 5 March 2016 in Fabra i Coats, the Creation Factory, located in Carrer de Sant Adrià 20, Barcelona. Participants will be required to develop their ideas into demos and present both to a panel of judges. The latter will be appointed by the ECIM consortium and will decide which two solutions will progress to the next stage. Hackathon winners will get a cash prize of €1,000 each. In evaluating the proposals the judges will use the following criteria:

  • User interface and its quality;
  • Originality, creativity and innovative potential of the proposed solution;
  • The extent to which ECIM platform has been used (online support will be available during the event)
  • Technical and operational feasibility based on the proposed development plan for turning the prototype into a market-ready app; and
  • Business idea, its economic and financial sustainability.

After the hackathon three prototypes – two from the March hackathon and one from the January one – will undergo Creapolis Accelerator programme at ESADE Business School. The programme acts as an incubator for promising start-ups and will allow the three teams to develop their into working apps ready to hit the market. As in the previous stage, participants will need to pitch their proposals to a panel of judges who will convene on 20 May 2016 to pick a winner who will be rewarded with a €3,500 cash prize, an opportunity to validate his business idea using the Living Lab methodology and, last but not least, access to co-working space and e-founders meetups at the ESADE Entrepreneurship Institute for the duration of four months. Cash prizes worth €1,000 and €500 will be awarded to silver and bronze finalists, respectively. In making their final decision the judges will pay particular attention to the level of market readiness of the proposed solution.
